Explosion Protection and Reduced Downtime with REMBE® EX-GO-VENT Explosion Vents
In plants producing organic products there are often considerable quantities of fine dust. Initially, these fine dusts are only combustible material. However, enriched with oxygen this combustible material become highly a explosive mixture. If then an ignition source is present, this often results in enormous damage for men and machines.
According to ATEX directive 94/9/EG, companies are obliged to install primary explosion protection in order to reduce the risk of a dust explosion. However, the reality looks different. The probability of the dust explosion risk is reduced but not completely eliminated. So in complying with the primary explosion protection obligationn, the risk of dust explosion in a plant is statistically lower, but the dust explosion risk itself still exists.
Considering this risk potential, ATEX strongly advises additional explosion protection in plants operating with organic fine dusts. Due to the statistical lower risk of dust explosion hazard, the passive explosion protection by explosion venting, provides the ideal alternative. If a dust explosion occurs, the explosion pressure is reduced to a harmless level within in the plant. According to ATEX directive 94/9/EG these explosion vents must be approved.
During production processes, these explosion vents must resist operation conditions, e.g. pulsations, change in temperature, erosion. While considering the operating conditions, burst panels must not fail too early due to material fatigue, resulting in costly plant shutdown.
