Multiple Benefits From New Drier

Following the commissioning of a new model CD260J indirect steam drier and FF150 waste heat evaporator by Rendertech, PPCS Ltd has experienced a number of worthwhile benefits at their Silverstream rendering plant.

Since the time the plant was originally constructed in 1991, a direct fired drier has been in use at the facility.

Rendertech’s recent introduction of indirect steam drying has brought a number of beneficial factors to the plant which, taken together, have proved to be highly cost effective.

The stickwater, previously a wastewater stream containing protein solids and fat is now concentrated in the evaporator before finish drying. As a result, the yield of meat and bonemeal has increased and a high strength wastewater stream eliminated.

The elimination of this stream along with reduced condenser water consumption has reduced effluent treatment costs obviating the need for treatment of wastewater through the Dunedin municipal system and has also resolved some wastewater compliance issues.

Environmentally, a further benefit has accrued. Odour from the site has been virtually eliminated. This is an important consideration for an industrial plant, which is located in close proximity to a housing area.
