PowderHandling.com.au - March 2009 Newsletter:

Welcome...

....to the March issue of the PowderHandling.com.au on-line newsletter.

Although a buzzword in today's manufacturing industries, the term "Lean Manufacturing" or "Lean Production" (Lean) was first coined 20 years ago and is often accredited to the book first published in 1990, "The Machine That Changed the World". The book is based on the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's $5 million, five-year study on the future of the automobile.

So what is Lean Manufacturing? Simply put, Lean Manufacturing is a systematic approach to identifying and eliminating waste through continuous improvement by flowing the product at the demand of the customer.

When it comes to the Powder Handling and Processing Industry, Lean Manufacturing principals can offer considerable benefits and savings in many of todays production processes and this will be amongst the topics discussed at next weeks "Formulation, Mixing and Blending Seminar". So with only a week to go, if you still haven't registered, now is the time to jump on the seminar web site and register before it's too late! More details can be found below. We look forward to seeing you there!

Stay tuned next month for an announcement about our seminar in New Zealand in June. Email us if you would like advanced information.

Any of you who use the business networking site, LinkedIn, may be interested to know that I recently started a "Powder Handling & Processing Group". If you are already a member of LinkedIn, why not sign up and join in the discussions with other industry professionals from around the world. Use this link to join the group.

PowderHandling.com.au is pleased to present the Formulation, Mixing and Blending Seminar, an event that will focus on.....

The Processes Involved in the Mixing or Blending of Dry Ingredients (Powders or Granules).

Dry powder blending is at the heart of many processing industries today, yet it is most likely the least understood of all the processes.

Mixing and blending of dry ingredients occurs frequently in food processing, pharmaceutical processing, petro-chemicals and plastics, to name but a few. And although mixing and blending technology has greatly improved over the years and many blenders are now capable of mixing all kinds of powders, the process of selecting the best blender and the correct overall system design for a specific application, still remains an art form because of the many variables involved.

In today's 'Lean Manufacturing' environment, it is more critical than ever that careful consideration is given to blend times, equipment flexibility, ease of cleaning and product segregation (de-mixing of the blended product) in post blend handling.

This seminar will not only assist in the design and selection of new blending installations, but will also help to take the mystery out of your current blending operation, covering topics such as:
  • Blend Formulation
  • Mixer Selection and Evaluation
  • Continuous Blending
  • Batch Blending
  • Product Properties and Characteristics
  • Segregation
