Welcome to the February issue of the PowderHandling newsletter. January 2007 has been and gone and for my family and I, it was a time for reflection. It marked the 20th anniversary of our departure from the UK and arrival in New Zealand. Apart from then moving on in 1997 and settling in Australia, a lot has happened in those 20 years!

Having proudly spent the last 20 years in this industry in the Australasian region, this anniversary also got me thinking about what changes the industry has seen in that time. When you look at where the world was technologically 20 years ago, we have come a long way. The fax machine was the latest "must have" communications tool. How often do we send a fax today? Today, we can't live without our mobile phones, PDA's, Note Book Computers and if we can't communicate with someone by email, we are at a loss! All of these were in their infancy 20 years ago.

But back to our industry, what major technological changes have we seen? Obviously, we've ridden on the back of the electronic era and seen incredible improvements in how we control the equipment and systems we use. This itself has given massive improvements in safety, productivity, product integrity, hygiene and so on.

We have also seen dramatic improvements in manufacturing techniques, which have improved the quality of the equipment we use. We can now produce machined parts with much improved tolerances for example, or offer fabricated stainless steel equipment with a much higher standard of finish, more economically than we could previously.

However, despite these technological advancements that have offered fantastic improvements for the industry, the nuts and bolts hardware has changed very little for many, many years. There is no doubt that equipment has been "improved" or "redesigned" to better suit the needs of today’s modern industry. But what was the last absolutely uniquely new piece of equipment that was introduced to the Powder and Bulk Materials Handling Industry?

That is my question to you. Please email me with your thoughts, comments or suggestions and we'll post these on the web site and in next month’s newsletter.

I hope you enjoy this month’s newsletter. If you have any comments or suggestions on how we could improve this industry resource, please email me and let me know.

Web Site Tip - Searching:

The most effective way to search the entire content of the PowderHandling.com.au web site is to use the “Site Search” Box in the navigation panel to the right of the screen. A “Site Search” searches all elements of the web site and gives results from four separate categories:-

Supplier Search Results – This lists all suppliers whose name contains the search phrase used. Clicking on the suppliers name will then take you to their listing on PowderHandling.com.au.

Equipment Search Results – This lists all product categories that contain the search phrase used. Clicking on a category will then take you to that category and show all listed suppliers of that specific item.

Article Search Results – This lists all articles on the web site that contain the search phrase used. Clicking on an article link, then takes you to the actual article.

Newsletter Search Results – This lists all the PowderHandling newsletters that the search phrase is used in. Clicking on a newsletter link, then takes you to the actual newsletter.

In the example below, we used the search phrase “Pneumatic Conveying”.

Firstly, enter the search phrase in the box, eg Pneumatic Conveying. Then click the “Search” button. (See example below)
