Newsletter - Issue 6
Welcome to the February issue of the PowderHandling newsletter. January 2007 has been and gone and for my family and I, it was a time for reflection. It marked the 20th anniversary of our departure from the UK and arrival in New Zealand. Apart from then moving on in 1997 and settling in Australia, a lot has happened in those 20 years!Having proudly spent the last 20 years in this industry in the Australasian region, this anniversary also got me thinking about what changes the industry has seen in that time. When you look at where the world was technologically 20 years ago, we have come a long way. The fax machine was the latest "must have" communications tool. How often do we send a fax today? Today, we can't live without our mobile phones, PDA's, Note Book Computers and if we can't communicate with someone by email, we are at a loss! All of these were in their infancy 20 years ago.
But back to our industry, what major technological changes have we seen? Obviously, we've ridden on the back of the electronic era and seen incredible improvements in how we control the equipment and systems we use. This itself has given massive improvements in safety, productivity, product integrity, hygiene and so on.
We have also seen dramatic improvements in manufacturing techniques, which have improved the quality of the equipment we use. We can now produce machined parts with much improved tolerances for example, or offer fabricated stainless steel equipment with a much higher standard of finish, more economically than we could previously.
However, despite these technological advancements that have offered fantastic improvements for the industry, the nuts and bolts hardware has changed very little for many, many years. There is no doubt that equipment has been "improved" or "redesigned" to better suit the needs of today’s modern industry. But what was the last absolutely uniquely new piece of equipment that was introduced to the Powder and Bulk Materials Handling Industry?
That is my question to you. Please email me with your thoughts, comments or suggestions and we'll post these on the web site and in next month’s newsletter.
I hope you enjoy this month’s newsletter. If you have any comments or suggestions on how we could improve this industry resource, please email me and let me know.
