Welcome to the November issue of the e-Newsletter from PowderHandling.com.au. It's hard to believe that we are well into the final quarter of the year and that the Christmas holidays are once again just around the corner! You can hear the chorus starting already. No, I don't mean the chorus to Jingle Bells; I mean the other one we hear at this time every year - "Where did the year go?" So how has 2006 been for your company? I am thrilled to be able to once again report that interest in our industry resource has continued beyond our expectations. The number of listed suppliers continues to increase and sponsorship opportunities are being taken up by big and small companies alike. (Click here to see our latest GOLD Members)

We are also seeing increasing international interest, both from visitors looking for equipment and from supplier companies requesting to be listed on our Suppliers Directory. We welcome the international visitors, as this raises the profile of the local industry overseas and increases export opportunities for our listed suppliers, but it raises the question about listing overseas suppliers on the directory and this is where I would like YOUR feedback.

As you are aware, we started PowderHandling.com.au as a specialist web site dedicated to the Powder and Bulk Materials Handling and Processing Industries in Australia and New Zealand, only listing companies from this region and only listing companies that sell products or services specific to our industry. We will never change the latter & become just another "me too" directory site. But would it be beneficial to the local industry to have a separate directory on our web site, specifically for international suppliers? Please let me know your thoughts on this. From my many years spent working for suppliers in the industry, I know how difficult it can be to find time to do what we know we should all be doing - marketing! THIS MONTHS FEATURE ARTICLE:

The ever-increasing use of FIBCs across a multitude of industries brings with it the growing need at the product source, for the supply of equipment to accurately fill the bags, whilst minimising wastage and dust.

The filling of FIBCs with bulk materials can be accomplished using several different weighing systems, each employing either a conventional platform scale or an overhead load cell system. Each method has its own advantages and disadvantages and should be selected based on particular site requirements. The design should also cover all the OH&S issues relating to placing the empty FIBC, removing the full FIBC and how the operator accesses the filling station.

NOVEMBERS PRODUCT OF THE MONTH:

The November Product of the Month is the MAGNE//FLO Impact Weigher from Flow Force Technologies Pty Ltd of Adelaide, SA, a company with more than 18 years experience in designing and building Impact Weighers.

Impact Weighers (or solids flow meters) for the mass flow measurement of bulk solids and powders, have been around for many years and are successfully used in the Grain, Minerals Processing and Cement Industries around the world. However, there have always been issues with using Impact Weighers in more critical applications such as the Food, Pharmaceutical or Chemical Industries, particularly where cleaning is critical to prevent product cross contamination or bacterial growth.

Having gained a wealth of experience in this specialist field over the past 18 years, Flow Force became very aware of the issues involved with using Impact Weighers in these more critical applications and recognised a need for a machine specifically designed to meet these demands. Consideration had to be given to handling difficult materials such as food powders, hazardous chemicals, hydroscopic fertilisers etc., but specific attention had to be paid to the many applications where operators need to routinely clean the weigher internals. In particular, the historical problems associated with cleaning in place having the potential to damage the load cell or other force sensor, had to be addressed.
