Accuweigh commenced operations in Adelaide during June 1992 by founding partners, Brenton Cunningham & Greg Brogan. Brenton’s experience lay in engineering sales, management, marketing and administration, whilst Greg’s skills lay in mechanical engineering, automation, and hands-on trouble shooting.
After establishing Accuweigh’s position as SA’s largest scale company, Mr Cunningham identified the huge potential for growth in WA and soon established Accuweigh’s first branch office in Perth. Client enquiries for packaging and filling equipment led to the Brenton’s close working relationship with Ross Waller, the owner of a small packaging machine manufacturer known as WeighPack Services. In 1997, Mr Waller was admitted as a third partner due to his expertise in design, development and implementation of packaging equipment and complete automatic production lines.
The goal of the three directors was to establish and maintain a weighing and packaging company that offers its customers high quality equipment, prompt professional service and total solutions through a motivated and professional sales, services, and administration team. The diverse skills and experience of the three directors complimented one another and reinforced the strengths of the company whilst also satisfying their own corporate and personal passions, career interests and ambitions.
Soon after, Accuweigh acquired the Avery Scales agency for industrial weighing products for WA, SA, VIC & NSW which led Accuweigh’s expansion into the eastern states. The Avery agency for QLD came in the following year. Going from strength to strength, Accuweigh also acquired the exclusive agency for Salter Weightronix during 2001 which was renamed to Salter Australia Pty Ltd, further strengthening the company’s product mix and taking staff numbers up 65.
A specialised weighbridge manufacturing company was the next acquisition with Melbourne based Ultrahawke Pty Ltd further strengthening the group’s base in industrial weighing. Started in the 1850’s, Ultrahawke recently celebrated 150 years of operation and continues to operate as a separate business. A few years later, Queensland Weighing Machines (QWM) based in Brisbane and with a branch in Sydney, was purchased to further increase Accuweigh’s market share in both NSW & QLD states.
To cater for the reporting, automation and control needs of industry, an emerging software company in Adelaide (AASoftware) was merged into the operation for all software to be written in-house. This significant milestone allows Accuweigh to perform full Turnkey installations without requiring external contractors to complete this critically important component of large projects.
Budpak Packaging Systems from Newcastle was then acquired taking staff numbers to over 100 and was soon followed by another small packaging company in Melbourne to enhance Accuweigh/Budpak’s packaging expertise into the VIC branch.
Independent Scales in New Zealand with their three branches then joined the group to operate as a separate division mainly catering for sales and service into NZ’s food industry. Another Australian company was then formed, Scale Discount Warehouse, to cater for online sales of discounted scales and weighing equipment to compete against the ever increasing flow of cheaper imported scales entering Australia from overseas.
Brisbane based Scale Components was the next acquisition by the Accuweigh Group for its highly valued agency for the CubiScan range of Cubing and Dimensioning Systems as used predominantly in the freight and warehousing industries. Scale Components is also a supplier of load cells and weighing electronics to both the weighing industry and to many OEM’s. Scale Components is an official distributor of the Vishay range of load cells which including the brands of Revere, Sensortronic, Tedea Huntleigh and Celtron. Exclusive Australian distributor of the Systec range of German designed & manufactured weighing electronics is another badge that Scale Components wears proudly.
Another Melbourne based weighing company, Colonial Weighing, also recently joined the group and operates under their own name servicing the weighing equipment of many large well known organisations throughout Australia. At this same time, Ultrahawke opened an export division in South Africa to cater for that county’s needs in heavy duty weighbridges.
Accuweigh/Budpak’s competitive advantage is that they invest in their industry and community by actively employing and training apprentices and trainees to cater for continued company growth. They have created in-house training programs to continue developing the skills of their staff for the benefit of both Accuweigh and their clients.
Accuweigh’s charity initiative, “A Higher Cause”, donates a percentage of each branch’s profits to their local charities, inspiring their staff to help those in their community that can benefit the most from their financial assistance.
